5 reasons why you should study abroad at least once

To study abroad can be a daunting decision. Of course, there is a lot to consider, but it is worth it. Take it from someone who – on a year abroad – not only survived but thrived!

Last year I spent my time studying in Russia (Yaroslavl and St Petersburg). I began learning Russian in my first year at University. I knew that after two years of studying I would have to spend time in the country to really get to grips with the language and culture. It was a gigantic challenge – rather scary but extremely rewarding. Here is why you, too, should study abroad when given the chance!

It is an amazing opportunity to see the world!

While studying in Russia I travelled extensively and cheaply, even making it as far as Vladivostok on the North Korean border. The beauty of spending a year (or semester) abroad is that you don’t have as many responsibilities as you do when studying in the UK. So, you a lot more time and money to spend exploring the part of the world where you find yourself! Finding hidden gems in the country you’re in or hopping on a train to a neighbouring country for the weekend is easy! You also become familiar with overcoming the challenges of travel and inspiration to seek out future travel experiences!

You gain an understanding of a culture different to your own!

While the smell of a different cuisine, the bluntness of restaurant staff and the complicated public transport system may seem strange and frustrating to begin with, you will soon become accustomed to and even prefer it!

Understanding a culture different to your own is a skill which will only serve to enhance your personal and professional life. Cultural awareness and international experience is often highly desired by many employers.

Language!

As a keen language enthusiast this benefit was obviously going to be high on my list! For me, the main attraction of studying abroad was the unrivalled opportunity of learning a language from the natives. Of course, living in a country is the best way of enhancing any linguistic skills.

Many locals are pleased if you try with the basics (Hello, please, thank you, goodbye) and the gist of almost any day-to-day conversation can be translated using body language, hand gestures and facial expressions – honestly! Make the most of every opportunity to practice with your travel dictionary and you never know what kind of amazing conversations you might find yourself having. Some of the most interesting conversations I had in Russia occurred in train carriages, cafes and taxis.

Make lifelong friends and find out more about yourself!

For years following your time spent studying abroad, you will reminisce about your most striking memories, reunite in exciting destinations and keep in touch with the interesting people you met using social media. You will also find out a lot more about yourself, gaining confidence and independence.

Enjoy coming home!

At the end of the day there is nothing quite like a good cup of tea and your own bed. After your amazing experiences studying abroad you will have a newfound appreciation for home.

So, what are you waiting for?! Start planning today!
