What are some ways to learn noun genders in Spanish?

As all Spanish nouns are classified as either masculine and feminine, I have found several ways of learning how to easily remember and be able to recognise the gender of a noun when I see it written down or hear it in conversation. This is an important skill as by knowing the gender of a noun you wish to use, you can then use it confidently in sentences and compliment it with adjectives without making errors in your agreements. A good rule to retain is that most Spanish nouns ending in 'o' for example 'perro' are masculine. Similarly, words ending in 'a' e.g. 'mesa' are usually feminine. Other nouns are less easily distinguishable, however I find that remembering endings like 'ión' are associated with feminine nouns seems to help. Making lists of these endings and separating them into different columns dependent on their gender can be very beneficial and helps me to remember them quickly.
