Describe what you would see when a piece of potassium is placed on water. Why does this happen?

THe potassium would move around on the water and fizz. This is because it is an alkali metal that reacts with the water. 2K + 2H2O --> 2KOH + H2. The fizzing is the result of this reaction. Discussion regarding the state of each compound/element.
