Adam can pay for his gym membership in one go at £180 or in monthly sums of £20. Work out the percentage increase of paying monthly to 1 decimal place.

We need to start by working out the price Adam will pay for the entire year if he chooses the monthly option. We do this by multiplying £20 x 12 months = £240. Next we need to find the difference (increase) of this from the £180. We do this by taking away £240 - £180 = £60. Our final step is to create a fraction using these figures to work out the percentage increase from £180. Our fraction has the increase as the numerator (on top) and the original price as the denominator (on the bottom). We get 60/180, and to convert this to a fraction, we use a calculator and type this in multiplied by 100 (as that's how we work out percentages). This gives us 0.333 x 100 = 33.33333%. Now the question asks for it to 1 decimal place, so we must remember to write this in the final answer box as 33.3%.
