Solve the linear equation 12x - 4 = 3x + 2

The objective of this question is to find the solution, what is x equal to? The first thing to do is try to get all x terms on one side of the equation and all non x terms on the other. Here we have positive 3x on the right so we can minus 3x from both sides in order to get rid of the 3x on the right: 12x - 3x - 4 = 3x - 3x + 2 --> leaving us with 9x - 4 = 2. The second step now is to get all the non x terms on to the right side of the equation, so we add 4 to both sides: 9x - 4 + 4 = 2 + 4 --> leaving us with 9x = 6.

Finally, we need to get x by itself, because the x is being multiplied by 9, we do the inverse, and divide both sides by 9: 9x/9 = 6/9, the 9s cancel out on the left and you simplify 6/9 to 2/3 --> leaving us with x = 6/9, therefore x= 2/3.
