In what way is an English Language essay different to an English Literature essay at A Level?

One of the main things to remember when it comes to an A Level English Language essay is that you have a completely different aim to when you are writing an English Literature essay. Whilst during Lit essays you are usually arguing a point relating to the meaning of the text, e.g. symbolism .etc, Lang essays can be seen as a lot more straightforward; you are merely analysing the text and what it aims to do. An example of a point in a Lang essay could be, "The use of 2nd person pronouns such as "you" and "your" link to Fairclough's theory of synthetic personalisation: are used in order to make the text seem more personal, therefore aiming to make the reader more understanding of the situation in this case". The structure of a Lang essay is also different to that of a Lit essay: Introduction: A few sentences, explaining the context, aim, audience and genre of the text. Paragraphs: Pick a particular feature for each, such as lexical fields, informal register .etc. No conclusion is needed
