How do I effectively close-read a passage from a novel studied in the exam? - GCSE English Literature

Student should read the passage once over to try and place it within the context of the novel. Highlight key terms in the question, e.g. a question asking how Steinbeck presents the relationship between George and Lennie in Of mice and Men. On the second reading, identify any literary techniques or methods that could possibly be used in the answer, e.g. similes, metaphors, personification. The point of the exam question is to see if the student can write effectively and concisely, therefore the PETE rule should be followed:

P - Point/Statement -- make a point in reference to the question, e.g. Steinbeck presents a parent-child relationship between George and Lennie

E - Evidence -- select the relevant quotation from the passage which supports your point

T - Technique -- identify the correct method the author employs to convey such a relationship

E - Explanation -- elaborate on your point, but be careful not to repeat yourself, on why and how the author presents this relationship

Depending on the amount of time in the exam, aim to write 5-6 paragraphs, one point (PETE) per paragraph, and also leave time for a conclusion at the end
