Exercise causes an increase in heart rate. Describe the role of receptors and of the nervous system in this process.

Chemoreceptors detect an increase in acidity caused by a rise in CO2. Impulses are sent to the medulla oblongata, which is linked to the sinoatrial node (SAN) by the sympathetic nervous system, to which it sends more impulses. This increases heart rate.
