How are red blood cells adapted to carrying oxygen

Biconcave discs- to increase surface area for oxygen carriage Haemoglobin- increases affinity for oxygen uptake at the lungs. However, at the respiring tissues, the increased CO2 concentration allow release of O2 from the red blood cells.Lack of organelles in red blood cells, allowing a greater surface area to volume ratio for oxygen carriage.
