What is the function of a capillary and how is it adapted to carry out this function?

Capillaries deliver blood to individual cells in the body, supplying them with oxygen and nutrients and removing waste products such as carbon dioxide. Capillaries are able to do this because their walls are specially adapted. The wall is only one cell thick and permeable so substances can diffuse easily in and out.
