Carbon electronic configuration: 1s22s22p2. Has the ability to gain electronic stability by filling the 2p orbitals. There are space for four electrons so can form four bonds with electron donating atoms (eg. H, Cl) giving the new electronic configuration about carbon: 1s22s22p6. (Credit would be given for box diagrams with half arrows). When forming four bonds with four differnt atoms (assuming they're of equal size as steric implications are beyond the scope of A level) a td conformation is formed due to it being the lowest energy conformation (consider bonds as negative charges and as such desire to repel each other equally). A 3D drawing is required for full credit including labelled 109.5o bond angle, however a dot and cross diagram would gain some credit.
