What is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?

Essentially they both describe the same biological process whereby chromosomes are divided during cell division. Mitosis produces two diploid daughter cells which are identical to eachother (produces new somatic cells). Meiosis results in 4 haploid daughter cells which are all genetically unique (produces gametes).
