How do I structure a 30 mark essay question?

When structuring a 30 mark question, prepare for the question to sometimes be split in to two main sections. For example "Explain how aggressive male behaviour is shown in this extract" followed by "Explain how aggressive male behaviour is shown in this play as a whole". Begin my outlining what you will argue in your introduction and a brief overview of your stance. Make sure to start by tackling the extract, and then going on to make references to how you're aware this isn't just subject to the extract, but also evident in other scenes of the play as well - using examples. This is the general structure of the essay answer to follow when the question is split in to two main areas. To get the top marks when stating what terminology is used and how "aggressive male behaviour is shown", make sure anything you quote from the play is explained, using the technique Point, Evidence, Explain. Make sure, with a play to also read in to the stage directions, as these can sometimes structure the tone of the play. Finally, to get the top marks, relate to the broader societal issues of 'aggressive male behaviour' to make reference to context - this can be interwoven throughout the essay to make the answer flow. Finally - remember practice makes perfect, so the more you practice writing in a timed setting, the better!
