The element sulfer is a common componant of coal. When the coal is burned, what pollutant will the sulfer form? How will this new compound impact the environment?

Sulfer, when burned in the presence of oxygen, will form sulfer dioxide (SO2). This can then dissolve in rain water, forming sulfuric acid. This will then fall to the ground as acid rain which can then kill plants, errode man made structures such as statues made from limestone and even acidify water in rivers and lakes.
