Explain the role of enzymes in digestion? (4 marks)

Enzymes are biological catalysts that hydrolyse chemical bonds in biological molecules, such as lipids. Enzymes are important in digestion, as they aid the absorption of molecules across the lumen of the small intestine. Without enzyme action, our cells would not be able to utilise the energy contained in the food we consume, through respiration. This is due to food molecules being too large to cross the cell membrane.
