How does a plant respond to light?

Plants have cells within them called photoreceptors. These receptors are light sensitive and the plant can detect the strength and direction of light, which is important for photosynthesis. The mechanism of plant response to light is known as photoautotropism - photo meaning light, and autotropism meaning an automatic growth response. It is the hormone auxin that initiates this response
