Explain why the pancreas is described as both an endocrine and an exocrine organ.

This question requires you to know the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands, as well as knowing the basic functions of the pancreas.
Endocrine = secretes directly into the blood stream(usually hormones)Exocrine = secretes via ducts to a specific place or area (usually enzymes)
The pancreas has a dual function. As an endocrine organ, it secretes insulin and glucagon hormones directly into the blood stream to regulate blood glucose levels throughout the day. As an exocrine organ, it secretes pancreatic fluid (which contains many digestive enzymes) into the pancreatic duct which the enters the duodenum via the Ampulla of Vater.
