When would I use the quadratic formula?

You would use the quadratic formula when trying to find the value of a variable such as x in a quadratic equation but it can not be successfully factorised with whole numbers. Treating the the equation in the form ax²+bx+c=0 then putting the values into the equation, two values of x will be found from switching the sign in the equation.
