How would I structure a comparative essay on two poems?

When handling two poems, I would suggest it is better to begin by analysing each poem separately. For each poem, work out the theme, symbols/motifs, imagery, rhythm and metre, form, contextual matters. Once you have noted down all your analyses, see if you can find connections between the two poems. For example, if they both include natural imagery, then it can be suggested that they share the theme of nature. Consider what the poets are trying to do with their natural imagery by focusing on context, and whether they are from similar periods of history. Finally, discuss what the significance is in their similarities or differences; why did the poet include it in their poem and what are they trying to do with it.
