What is the function of mitochondria?

Mitochondria is an organelle responsible for providing energy. Mitochondria releases energy through the chemical process of aerobic cellular respiration, where one molecule of glucose can be broken down (oxidised) to produce up to 36 ATP (adenosine triphosphate) energy-carrying molecules.
