How would you find the mean for the numbers 100, 230, 450, 120 and 250?

The first step would be to add all of the numbers together. In this example the sum of the numbers would be 1150. The second step would be to count how many numbers there are, so 100 would count as 1 number as would 230. This would give a total of 5 numbers. The final step would be to divide the sum of the numbers by the number of numbers. For example 1150/5 to give 230 which is the above example's mean number.
