In the field of genetics what does the term "mutation" describe?

A mutation is a change in the sequence of nucleotides that make up DNA. This can be caused by a range of internal and external factors. Mutations within the coding region of genes can lead to changes in the protein they encode or may have no effect due the redundancy from codon triplets. If there is no effect this is termed a silent mutation.
