What are the key organelles in a cell and their functions?

Both animal and plant cells have multiple different organelles inside them. An organelle is like a compartment of a cell, split off from the cytoplasm by its membrane, that is specialised for a particular function.Nucleus: this carries the DNA of a cell, and can send out mRNA to code for proteins.Ribosomes: protein synthesis.Mitochondria: powerhouse of the cell, converting glucose into ATP 'energy units'.Chloroplasts: found in plant cells only, this converts carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into glucose 'energy storage unit'.Cell wall: in plant cells only, it is made of cellulose and is external to the outer cell membrane; it is a protective barrier and helps the plant cell keep its shape.Golgi body: modifies newly synthesised molecules, sorts and sends them out across the cell.
