How do I structure my paragraphs in my essays?

A general structure to follow for answers is 'PEEL'. First of all, it is important to ensure that the paragraphs being written address the essay question given. As such, each paragraph should start with a clear point (P) addressing the question: this will help keep your paragraphs focussed.Next, evidence (E) and explanation (E) are needed to support the point. Ensure that the evidence you have selected fits the point well, and demonstrate this in your explanation. It is likely for a given point you will have multiple pieces of evidence: try and think about how these pieces of evidence not only compare but also contrast to provide a more nuanced answer. Finally, try and think how this paragraph can be linked (L) to the next paragraph, and more widely your whole essay. A useful way to think about this is before you start your essay, have a clear 'line of argument' in mind. This will allow you to write an essay with a narrative and will stop you from reaching your conclusion with lots of conflicting ideas and having to contradict yourself.
