Explain how a mutation in the gene coding for an enzyme could lead to the production of a non-functional enzyme.

The base sequence changes so the amino acid sequence changes therefore leading to a change in the types and location of bond formation thus a change in the tertiary structure occurs. This prevents the enzyme from functioning as the shape of the active site changes and no enzyme-substrate complexes are formed.
