How much work experience do I need?

It is important to stress that universities realise getting work experience is hard, therefore a lack of work experience should not be counted against you.

In my experience one week in primary healthcare ie a GP surgery, one week in secondary healthcare ie a hospital and an extended period of at least 3 months in some sort of voluntary role is a good target. Additionally, doing something different eg work experience abroad is a good way to differentiate yourself from other candidates.

You should take the time to reflect on your experiences to include in your personal statement and to discuss in interviews. Keeping a diary consisting of what you did and your thoughts is very helpful.
