Outline the process of protein synthesis (8 marks).

Firstly, we need to understand what the question title is asking... 'Outline' means to roughly describe and give a summary of the key points of a 'process' which is a series of chronological stages. Protein synthesis is a biology key word and we need to associate this word with its 2 stages: Transcription and translation. Because there are 8 marks available for this question, I would recommend giving a minimum of 4 correct chronological points for each of the stages to guarantee full marks!Transcription:1) In transcription, RNA polymerase binds to a sequence of DNA in a gene and unzips the double helix.2) This creates two single strands of DNA which act as templates.3) RNA polymerase aligns free floating RNA nucleotides * to the DNA via complementary base pairing. *To show the examiner you fully understand this, you could add an example e.g. C binds to G (REMEMBER: T is replaced with U in RNA). 4)The strand of mRNA leaves the nucleus via nuclear pores and enters the cytoplasm where translation occurs. Translation: 5) mRNA attaches to a ribosome and a start codon is read. 6) tRNA molecules attached to specific amino acids complementary bind with mRNA codons. rRNA causes peptide bonds to form between two amino acids. 7) tRNA detaches form the amino acid and mRNA shifts along for the next tRNA to come in.8) Translation stops when a stop codon is reached. A protein is formed from the sequence of amino acids.
