How are animals adapted for effective gas exchange?

Many alveoli which provide a large surface area for rapid diffusion. The walls of the capillaries are only one cell thick which provides a short diffusion pathway, allowing rapid diffusion. Blood circulation ( around alveoli) allows for a concentration gradient to be maintained allowing for rapid diffusion. Concentration gradient also maintained by ventilation ( bringing air to and away from the alveoli.
