Work out 2 3/4 x 1 1/2. Give your answer in terms of a mixed fraction in simplest form.

Step one: As the fractions are mixed fractions we need to convert them into top heavy fractions to multiply. 2 3/4 is equivalent to 11/4 ( as 2 3/4 = 4/4 + 4/4 + 3/4 = 11/4). 1 1/2 is equivalent to 3/2 (as 1 1/2 = 2/2 + 1/2 = 3/2).Step two: Now we have two top heavy fractions we can now multiply them together. To do this you multiply the numerators together and the denominators together so, 11x3 = 33 and 4x2 = 8 so the answer is 33/8.Step three: But we are not done yet because the question says give the answer in terms of a mixed fraction so we need to convert 33/8 ( a top heavy fraction) into a mixed fraction. To do this we can notice that 8 divides into 33 four times with a reminder of 1. This means we can rewrite the fraction as 4 1/8.
