Explain how a compound such as Magnesium Oxide has a high melting point and conducts electricity when molten

A substantial amount of energy is required to break the strong ionic bonds between the ions Mg^2+ and O^2-. While in a solid state the molecular structure is rigid and does not have any free or mobile electrons however in a molten state the ions are free to move and carry charge.
