Why does the left side of the heart contain more muscle?

The left side of the heart contains oxygenated blood delivered by the pulmonary vein from the lungs. This blood must be pumped to the rest of the body, therefore more muscle is required to generate enough pressure to push the blood through the systemic circuit.
