How does photosynthesis lead to plant growth?

Photosynthesis converts light energy from the sun to chemical energy stored as glucose, i.e. the plant can make its own food using energy from the sun. The glucose is used by the plant in the process of respiration which converts glucose and oxygen to water and carbon dioxide, releasing energy in the cell. This energy is used for the synthesis of new biomaterials and for cell division, leading to overall plant growth. Therefore photosynthesis indirectly leads to plant growth via respiration.
