Work out 1 1/5 ÷ 3/4. Give your answer as a mixed number in its simplest form.

Because we have been given a mixed number, we can start by turning it into an improper fractions. An improper fraction is where the numerator is bigger than the denominator. To turn 1 and 1/5 into an improper fraction, the numerator would become 1 + (1x5) = 6. Therefore, the first fraction would be 6/5. When you divide two fractions , you turn the division sign into a multiplication sign and flip the second fraction. This gives you, 6/5 x 4/3. Now you can multiply the numerators together and the denominators together so on top you have (6x4) and on the bottom of the fraction you have (5x3) which equals 24/15. The question asks for the answer to be given as a mixed number. To do this divide the numerator by the denominator to give you a whole number, and the remainder goes above the denominator. Therefore, 24/15 = 1 and 9/15. 9/15 can be simplified by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 3 which gives you 3/5. So the answer in its simplest form is 1 and 3/5.
