Describe the bonding between sodium and chlorine in NaCl

Sodium donates its outer shell (valence) electron to chlorine, so that both have a full outer shell. Sodium and chlorine are then held together by electrostatic forces of attraction between the positively charged sodium ion and the negatively charged chlorine ion.
