Explain what metallic bonding is.

There is a structure of positively charged metal ions arranged in a regular pattern. Between these metal ions lie a sea of delocalised electrons which have been delocalised from the metal atoms to form the metal ions and are free to move. The delocalised electrons cause the attraction between the positive ions and delocalised electrons making the bonding strong.
