Compare and contrast the structures of fibrous and globular proteins.

The crucial thing with a "compare and contrast" question is that you have to give both similarities and differences to get full marks. Firstly, both of these proteins are chains of amino acids joined by peptide bonds and they both have bonds involved in holding the molecule in its three dimensional shape (for example, hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, etc). Globular proteins, however, are folded into compact spherical structures, whereas fibrous proteins often form parallel chains; globular proteins have tertiary structures whereas fibrous proteins are considered to not. Moreover, globular proteins have amino acids with hydrophilic groups pointing outwards from the surface of the protein, towards aqueous environments whereas fibrous proteins have hydrophobic groups on their surface.
