Describe how the structure of an antibody is related to its function?

1) They contain a variable region also called the Fab region, allowing the attachment of an antigen to the antibody

2) They contain 2 light chains and 2 heavy chains allowing a sturdy structure, also allowing for 2 variable regions so multiple antigens can be attached

3) The variable region is specific to an antibody hence allowing specificity to different antigens

4) The antibody contains a constant region also called Fc which can bind to phagocytes

5) There is a hinge region between the polypeptide chains allowing flexibility of the antibody when attaching to the antigen

6) Disulfide bonds strengthen the bond between the heavy and light chains making it sturdy so it can attach easily to an antigen
