Complete Question: Mr. Brown and his 2 children are going to London by train. An adult ticket costs £24 and a child ticket costs £12. Mr. Brown has a family rail card which gives his 1/3 off adult tickets and 60% off child tickets. Work out the total cost of the tickets when Mr. Brown uses his family Railcard.

Note: This question is taken from the June 2014 (morning) Foundation Edexcel paper, however I have also seen it (or similar) on Higher papers.

Answer:

a) 1 Adult: £24. Explain 1/3 off through the use of a pie diagram. Find that 1/3 is the same as 24/3 = 8. Therefore 1 Adult = 24-8 = £16.

b) 2 Children: 2*12 = £24. Explain 60% off through the use of a pie diagram - we recognize that this is the same as 40% of £24. Find that 24/10 = 2.4 and 2.4*4 = 9.6. Therefore 2 children = £9.60.

c) Total cost (with discounted price): 1 Adult + 2 Children. Find that (using long addition if necessary) 16 + 9.60 = £25.60.
