What is the process of maintaining a constant internal enviornment, and why does it matter?

The process by which our bodies maintain a constant internal environment is homeostasis. This includes things such as body temperature, blood glucose levels and pH levels. This is important because there a various enzymes that work in our body, and they all have an optimum level at which they work at and if levels deter from this level, even slightly, the enzymes will become denatured and cease to work. For example, our body temperature must stay at 37 degrees, as enzymes involved in the regulation of body temperature work most effectively at 37 degrees.
