Given that y = 5, solve the following equation for x, 9x - 3y = 97 - 5x

Subsitute y for 5 to give 9x - (3 * 5) = 97 - 5xCalculate the brackets 9x - 15 = 97 - 5xAdd 15 to both sides 9x = 112 - 5xAdd 5x to both sides 14x = 112Divide both sides by 14 x = 8

Solve for x, 4x+3.5 = 1

First, you regroup all numbers which are not factors of x on one side of the equation:
4x = 1 - 3.5
so 4x = - 2.5
Then, you isolate x:
x = - 2.5/4
x = - 5/8 = - 0.625

3 teas and 2 coffees have a total cost of £7.80. 5 teas and 4 coffees have a total cost of £14.20. Work out the cost of one tea and the cost of one coffee.

This is a typical simultaneous equations question. Using the information in the question we can write down two equations in two unknowns (let's say T=tea and C=coffee).(1) 3T + 2C = £7.80(2) 5T + 4C = £14...
