CV writing: our top tips

Thinking of getting a summer job? Now is the time to write up your CV and send it out to local businesses. Here are our top tips on CV writing.

Your local businesses will be looking for secondary school and sixth form students to employ over the summer holidays. Getting a summer job is a great way to make some extra money and improve your employability. But to apply for these jobs, you’ll need to write a CV. Don’t worry, below are some tips on how to create one.

The set up

Your CV should:

  • Be one page.
  • Have 3 sections: past education, work experiences, extracurricular activities.
  • Have clearly labelled sections.
  • Use the same font.
  • Include dates of all experiences.

Employers do not have a lot of time to look over CVs, they want everything to be clear and easy to read.

The content

After each work experience you should include 3 sentences about the key things you did, what you learnt and,  why it will be relevant to the job you are applying to. Make sure to be concise! Do your research and be very specific to the job you are applying for.

Only include extra-curricular activities that have built up skills that are relevant to the job you are applying for. Use this list of buzzwords to help explain to your employers why these hobbies have been important in building your character.

The best things to include are any positions of responsibility you have held at school, team leading experiences and, group projects. For example, ‘captain of the rugby team’, ‘head girl/boy’, ‘member of the school council’.

Check it!

  • Don’t forget to proof read your work for grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Don’t send the wrong copy of your CV to the employer; whether that be an old version or the document for another job.
  • Don’t use an unprofessional file name if you are emailing it; try name_CV.

Have fun CV writing and good luck with your applications!
