MyTutor Updates

Meet your new tutor reps

Our tutor rep scheme is officially live for 2023! This means we have 6 new brilliant tutor reps voted by you, for you. They’ll be there to listen to your feedback on your MyTutor experience, and share this directly back to the MyTutor team.

You can get up to speed on all the details about how your tutor rep scheme works in our previous blog here. Today we want you to get to know you new reps – so here they are! Introducing Charles, Rachael, Ishali, Aveneet, Tash and Kieren:

Charles

Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Charles and I am a second year undergraduate studying economics at the University of Bristol. My main area of tutoring is maths but I also frequently tutor all 3 of the sciences.

How long have you been a tutor for?
I have been a tutor on the platform for just under a year now and have completed 38 lessons in total.

Why did you decide to become a tutor rep?
I decided that I wanted to become a tutor rep because I love the concept of the platform and would love to help improve it in any way that I can. I know that I am a good listener and genuinely enjoy helping people, so this made me think that I would be a great fit for the role. I also have some ideas throughout my time on the platform that I think would be great additions to consider going forward!

What are you looking forward to most with this role?
I am most looking forward to making sure that all the tutors on the platform feel like they have a voice, and that any issues or ideas that they have will be heard and carefully considered.

What’s a fun fact about you?
A fun but embarrassing fact about me is that one time I ran myself a bath and forgot it was running… Flooded the whole house and had to replace the ceiling!!

Rachael

Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Rachael and I study Psychology at the University of Edinburgh 🙂 I tutor a variety of subjects, including English, Maths, Chemistry, and Psychology.

How long have you been a tutor for?
I’ve been tutoring for almost a year now!

Why did you decide to become a tutor rep?
One of my favourite things about working with MyTutor is how responsive the team is to the wants and needs of its tutors, and working alongside them to further improve the experience for tutors, students and parents alike sounded like a fantastic opportunity.

What are you looking forward to most with this role?
Gaining deeper insight into how the platform works as a whole, and being able to contribute to a community that has given me the opportunity to help others and grow myself.

What’s a fun fact about you?
I have 23 houseplants (and counting!) and they all have their own names 🙂

Ishali

Can you introduce yourself?
Hi, my name’s Ishali and I’m a second-year medical student at the University of Nottingham. I mainly tutor Science for all ages but have previously taught GCSE Maths and English too!

How long have you been a tutor for?
I’ve been a tutor for just over a year and have since done almost 450 lessons.

Why did you decide to become a tutor rep?
I spend a lot of time tutoring and have seen the platform undergo a lot of changes in the last year. I want to continue building the platform into a place where tutors receive plenty of work opportunities, get paid fairly, and feel supported with their tutoring. I also want to create a space where tutors can receive a financial incentive for sharing their lesson resources. This will hopefully help out new tutors and enable existing tutors to collaborate in delivering higher-quality lessons!

What are you looking forward to most with this role?
I’m excited to represent a company that I’ve really enjoyed working for this past year and put into place the feedback that tutors have about making the platform work better for them.

What’s a fun fact about you?
I love running and recently ran my first half marathon for Nottingham Hospitals Charity!

Avneet

Can you introduce yourself?
Hi there, my name is Avneet and I am studying MSc in Foundations of Clinical Psychology at Newcastle University. I tutor A-level Biology and Psychology, and GCSE Biology, Physics, Chemistry on MyTutor.

How long have you been a tutor for?
I have been a tutor on MyTutor for over 3 years now and have delivered 845 lessons on the platform.

Why did you decide to become a tutor rep?
Tutoring on MyTutor was my first job when I started university and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I have seen the platform evolve and go through many changes which have not only impacted us as tutors, and also our students. I wanted to be a Rep for the tutors on the site, as I want to bring to light how the platform’s policies and changes impact us, and how the platform can implement realistic changes to improve the tutoring experience for both the tutors and the tutees.

What are you looking forward to most with this role?
I am really looking forward to meeting and getting to know my fellow Reps as well as connect with the wider Tutor community. The platform has always been online (which is excellent) but although I have been as tutor for over 3 years, I feel that I haven’t really had a chance to connect with other tutors on the platform, so I am quite excited to finally engage with other tutors on the site through this role!

What’s a fun fact about you?
A fun fact about me is that I can fluently speak 4 languages!

Tash

Can you introduce yourself?
I’m Tash and I studied French and philosophy for my degree. I graduated from the University of Bristol last year. I tutor French and English.

How long have you been a tutor for?
I have been with MyTutor for over six years now!

Why did you decide to become a tutor rep?
Having been with MyTutor for so long, I have seen first-hand how things have changed. I can remember when the rep scheme was first created, put on pause and now is being run again and I know just how important the developments are. Over this time, I have found myself contacting MyTutor quite a lot to give feedback for improvements to be made. For example, I contributed to the feature of being able to see when students are typing and messages in the lesson space being timestamped.

The main reason I wanted to get involved is because I am driven by mental health and accessibility. These are non-negotiable priorities for me and I want fellow tutors to know that my (virtual) door is always open and that they are able to come to me with any questions, queries or difficulties that they have or that they have experienced. I want to represent tutors in our meetings accurately and in order to do that, I need feedback and ideas from a diverse number of tutors. I hope that this, combined with my experience on the platform, will mean making progress for individuals and our community.

What are you looking forward to most with this role?
I’m looking forward to getting to know my colleagues a lot more! I love teaching which is why I do it full-time and I plan to pursue it as a career. I have had experience working in a nursery, secondary school and sixth form, and although I love the personal touch students, tutors and parents benefit from that comes from 1:1 tutoring; I miss having colleagues. Being able to discuss methods used with students, share resources and just not feel so isolated are things I heartily look forward to!

What’s a fun fact about you?
I love the Harry Potter films (some would say to an excessive degree) and I have several playlists with music from the films to help me sleep, relax and work!

Kieren

Can you introduce yourself?
Hi there! I’m Kieren, a final year Physics & Astrophysics at the University of Glasgow. I tutor a range of subjects for people aged 6 to 19 (or any mature students taking subjects that traditionally fall within those age levels), primarily Maths, Physics and Chemistry — though I love a bit of English or proof reading.

How long have you been a tutor for?
I’ve been tutoring since 2015, but only began working with MyTutor in 2018 once I’d started university. Since then I’ve done 300 lessons, both private and schools.

Why did you decide to become a tutor rep?
I wanted to become a tutor rep because I strongly value institutions that consider their employees concerns, time, and needs. If your workforce is unhappy or improperly cared for, in my mind your space is not a fit workplace. I’ve been a representative for my class in university before, and worked on various youth panels at arts institutions, so I felt that I could help make MyTutor a more inclusive and considerate space for tutors, focusing especially on payment and disability access.

What are you looking forward to most with this role?
I’m looking forward to meeting fellow tutors, hearing about their ideas and learning more from them!

What’s a fun fact about you?
A fun fact about me is that I’m a big fan of cooking/art when I have the time & energy, and like mixing the two — from things like focaccia with Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ on it to Bart Simpson on some bread. I have no idea how any of my breads ever work because weirdly for a scientist, I never like to measure anything.

Over the rest of the academic year, these reps will be your voice and your support as we work together to make MyTutor better. There’s no time like the present! If there’s anything about your tutoring experience that you think could be better, you can get in touch with your reps here, and visit our dedicated tutor rep site.

As always, if you have any questions or feedback, we’d love to hear from you. You can reach us on tutors@mytutor.co.uk or 0203 773 6024.
