The increasing role of anglicisms in the German language is a negative development. Discuss.

  1. Look at the wording of the question. Is it a development at all? Look at the historic background of anglicisms in the German language; has their role increased over the years.

  2. Limit the scope of your essay. This is best done in the introduction. Here you might choose from the different types of anglicisms ('Fremdwörter') and discuss the types of areas prone to English loans.

  3. Take a stance. Discuss whether anglicisms have the potential to have a negative effect and whether they do in practice. Have an opinion on whether it is the increasing role of anglicisms or anglicisms on their own are promting this negative effect. You can include theoretical debates as well as the practical aspect of how certain institutions are responding to the development.

  4. Have a strong conclusion. In the case that the increasing role of anglicisms is viewed as a negative development, it is advised to also include possible improvements to address the issue.
