Two particles P and Q have masses 4 m and m respectively. Moving towards each other in a horizontal plane. The speeds of P and Q immediately before the collision are 2 u and 5u. Speed of P is 0.5u and direction of motion reversed

Find the speed and direction of motion of Q after the collision. Find the magnitude of the impulse exerted on P by Q in the collision. Firstly draw a diagram showing the system. Before and after the collision. using conservation of momentum rinciple work out the speed. 4m2u-m5u=4m*-0,5u+m*v 3mu=-2mu+mv -> v=5u Using impulse equation I=m(v-u) m is mass, v is final velocity and u is initial. Key work magnitude - don't need the sign and can consider either weight from newton's 3rd law. I=4m(1/2u--2u)=10muNs
