Solve 2x + 4 > 16

This is a simple GCSE inequality question. The aim is to solve the equation for x - get x on its own on the left side of the equation.

Step 1. We think of equations as balanced weighing scales, so whatever we do to one side of the equation, we must do to the other. Firstly, we want to take the 4 from the left side of the equation to the right side. To do this, we must minus 4 from both sides of the equation. This leaves us with 2x > 12.

Step 2. Finally, we must change our 2x into just one x on its own. To do this, we must divide both sides of the equation by 2. This leaves us with our final answer =  x > 6
