Describe one study using brain imaging technology in investigating the relationship between biological factors and behaviour.

When it comes to the field of neuroscience, brain-imaging technology is widely used in regards to investigating the relationship between brain structures and behaviour, most commonly after certain brain traumas have occurred. An example of a situation in which such a brain imaging technology was used was in the case study of H.M. H.M was an individual who fell of his bike at age 7 and since began suffering with epileptic seizures. When he was 27, a neurosurgeon named William Scoville decided to perform experimental surgery to try and stop the seizures. Post surgery, H.M suffered from amnesia and was not able to create new episodic and sematic memories. In 1997 Corkin et al, did a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of H.M´s brain. They then discovered that parts of the temporal lobe, including the hippocampus and amygdala, were missing, but also the damage was not as extensive as previously believed. This longitudinal case study has contributed enormously to the knowledge of how memory processes are related to specific brain areas. Due to the MRI we learned that procedural memories are not processed by the hippocampus. However, there are ethical considerations that need to be taken into account, such as the fact that since H.M suffered from amnesia he was not able to remember all the times he had participated in a research study. To conclude, brain-imaging technologies, such as MRI´s, are a favourable way for investigating the potential relationship between biological factors and behavioural ones. However, so far the scanning technologies are simply able to register the different structures and activity in the brain. They are not able to establish a cause-effect relationship at this time.
