Briefly outline how cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is used to treat schizophrenia and explain one limitation pf using CBT to treat schizophrenia

Part 1 is an application question, you need to apply your knowledge of CBT directly to schizophrenia. ###Use specific example as this shows the examiner that you are applying your knowledge directly to schizophrenia.### Example answer: The main goal of CBT is to rationalise a person’s irrational beliefs. Cognitive restructuring can achieve this, using the ABCDE framework. A patient’s Activating event (e.g. auditory hallucinations) and their Beliefs (e.g. ‘these voices control my actions) lead to a Consequence (e.g. fear, loneliness, isolation and paranoia). The consequence can be used by a therapist as a point of normalisation so that the patient feels less alienated; this helps to Disrupt their irrational belief. The patient then evaluates their original belief and restructures their thoughts by taking up a new belief (e.g. ‘these voices are not in control, I control my actions) which changes the previously negative consequences ###Part 2 is an evaluation question, evaluation questions can be tackled in the following format.### Point- One is that CBT requires motivation and a willingness to engage in the CBT process, otherwise treatment will not be successfull ### Evidence or Example – For example some paranoid schizophrenics may find it difficult to engage in the therapy as they may be reluctant to trusting strangers. Positive symptoms (include an example and ask the tutee for some examples) can result in a lack of awareness.### Explain- This would mean that the therapist would be unable to challenge the patient’s beliefs and that CBT would not be effective in reducing the patient’s symptoms.
