Explain why fossil fuels might become exhausted.

A good first step to answering questions on specific issues or processes would be to give a clear definition of the subject, in this case, fossil fuels. If you cannot immediately think of what to write this is a great way to get started. E.g. Fossil fuels are energy sources that have formed over millions of years, such as coal, oil and natural gas.A key point to this question is noting that they are finite resources, i.e. they will one day run out - 'become exhausted'. You need to demonstrate you know this and why. E.g. Fossil fuels are formed over a timescale that is not useful to people, requiring particular conditions and millions of years. It is not possible for humans to generate new fossil fuels so they will eventually run out as the chances of further discoveries are limited. You should then further clarify the specific reasons for the fossil fuels becoming exhausted, basically price and dependency. E.g. Fossil fuels remain the dominant energy form globally as they are often cheaper than other alternatives and the technology is well tested. Oil as fuel for transport and a base in a huge array of products means it in unlikely to be easily replaced, meaning our fossil fuel dependency will likely mean using them to exhaustion.Giving particular examples, of oil dependencies for example, may help to further demonstrate your understanding.A clear explanation of the reasons is most important, but it will also be important to link the ideas together where possible.
