Discuss the varying patterns of migration into the UK since the end of the second world war.

There are different components to this question:
Migration into the UK continues to change on a consistent basis. In the past, following the end of the war this saw an influx of families on a large scale from former colony nations. This, alongside civil unrest in Eastern Africa that saw movement of ethnic Gujaratis made up the bulk of the migration seen up to the 1980's. In more recent times, the pattern has changed as movement has increased from the EU as cross border movement has become easier.

I would now expect more references to Brexit, and the consequences of a financial squeeze in the UK that could be responsible for a fall in migration in recent times - references to previous targets and more recent patterns would be essential for A/A* candidates.
