Discuss how Sondheim utilises Melody and Harmony in "Agony" from "Into The Woods"

The melody of the piece is a vocal melody sung by a tenor or baritone. The word "agony" is Sue syllabically (one note per syllable) frequently on the same three notes, the tonic E flat (but an octave higher than the introduction). There are two rising sequences that add to the atmospheric anticipation. Sondheim has used word painting on the world "painful" as it is sign in a spoken manor- the parlando technique is seen being used in Sondheim's other musicals. The harmony, since the vocals are carried out by the soloist, lies with the accompanying orchestra. There are clear strings that sound the opening and closing of the song with a two note motion that continues (with slight pitch variation) thought the piece acting as an ostinato. Virtually all of the harmony fits the key therefore it is considered diatonic with occasional chromaticism.
